We are lucky to have so many beautiful beaches within driving distance from Cider Lodge. All of the below beaches have parking (paid), toilets, and cafés nearby. The North Devon tides are dramatic — it’s always a good idea to check tide times.
Saunton Sands is 10 miles away, around 25 minutes to drive.
3.5-mile stretch of golden sand backed by huge dunes (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). Excellent surfing, safe swimming areas, and plenty of space.
Dog rules: Dog-friendly all year round on most of the beach; small exclusion zone to the north/right of the main slipway (no dogs there).
Woolacombe Beach is about 13 miles away, 30 minutes drive.
One of the UK’s top-rated beaches — 2 miles of golden sand, great surfing/bodyboarding, rock pools, and family facilities. Stunning views to Morte Point.
Dog rules: Dog-friendly all year round. Seasonal zoning (typically April–early November): small no-dog zone at the northern end (between rocks and stream); dogs on leads in some middle sections; no restrictions on the southern end towards Putsborough.
Croyde Beach is 11 miles away, 25 minutes drive.
Iconic surfing bay with a pretty village backdrop, sand dunes, and rock pools. More sheltered; ideal for families or relaxing.
Dog rules: No dogs allowed on the main beach during peak season (1 May – 30 September). Dogs permitted off-season (October – April). Dogs may be allowed on leads in the dunes or on the South West Coast Path year-round — check signs.
Putsborough Sands is 12 miles away, 30 minutes drive.
Quieter southern end of the big Woolacombe–Baggy Point sweep. Golden sand, beautiful cliffs, and good surfing with fewer crowds.
Dog rules: Dog-friendly all year round on most of the beach. Seasonal restriction (typically April–October): no dogs on the section below the beach shop / far left (northern) end; dogs allowed north of the shop and on the wider southern areas.
Westward Ho! Beach is 11 miles way, 20 minutes drive.
Long, accessible beach right next to the village. Promenade, cafés, watersports, and family-friendly vibe; great for walks.
Dog rules: Dogs allowed all year. Seasonal restriction (1 May – 30 September): dogs prohibited on the southern/main Blue Flag section; restricted to the northern end (Sandymere Bridge towards the estuary). Dogs must be on leads on the promenade.
